Hong Kong International Airport (Chek Lap Kok) is the chief gateway into the territory for international visitors and also for many arriving from mainland China. The airport is ultra-modern and maintains connections with most major East and South East Asian cities, as well as a large number of European and North American destinations.

Ground transportation services from the airport permit easy transfer to Kowloon, Hong Kong Island and other destinations. The Airport Express train is the speediest and most convenient option for those wishing to travel to Hong Kong Island. Bus transport also runs to the island and to Kowloon, Discovery Bay and the Northern Territories. A shuttlebus service known as the Cityflyer is also available.

Car rental for overseas visitors is not really a possibility in Hong Kong on account of strict rules and regulations regarding licenses and other documentation.

Visitors can rent cars if they have followed the lengthy bureaucratic processes necessary, but for a vacation of usual duration, this is not usually a viable option.

The public bus network provides the most extensive coverage of the territory of any mode of transport on hand, although bus stops can be hard to find and offer information in Chinese only, so visitors may struggle to negotiate usage. With some perseverance, however, the double-decker buses can be of great use to visitors, as can the red and green minibuses known as 'maxicabs'.

Hong Kong Travel and Transport: Travel by Train - Hong Kong, China, CN
The train offers easy passage between major cities in Mainland China and Hong Kong, with services running daily from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Journey times can be exceptionally long and involve overnight travel. Sleeper carriages are available in such cases.

The Mass Transit Rail system (MTR) is one of the most convenient ways for visitors to travel between popular tourist destinations, transporting passengers to Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, the New Territories and the border with Mainland China. A light rail service (LRT) also operates in the New Territories.

Hong Kong Travel and Transport: Travel by Taxi - Hong Kong, China, CN
Taxis offer metered service and are a convenient means of travelling around, although few taxi drivers speak any English, so visitors will need to keep a map handy to indicate their desired destination. Cabs in the greater part of Hong Kong can be identified by their red bodywork and silver roofs. Those in the New Territories are green with white roofs. Taxi transport can only be hired from stands and not hailed in the street.
